Overview

When UFC fighter Kevin Holland needed a portable sauna that could travel with him between training camps, gyms, and fight venues, he didn't buy a prefab unit — he came to DFW Custom Sauna. The result was a towable, wood-fired luxury sauna that looks and performs like a permanent installation but hitches to a truck and goes wherever he does. That build put us on the map as one of the only builders in the country constructing truly luxury portable saunas.

The portable luxury sauna market barely exists — and that's exactly why we're in it. Most "portable" saunas on the market are pop-up tents, barrel kits on skids, or converted horse trailers with a wood stove bolted inside. They work, technically, but they're not what anyone would call luxury. The gap between a $2,000 tent sauna and a $200,000 permanent build used to have nothing in between. DFW Custom Sauna fills that gap with towable units that feature the same western red cedar interiors, handcrafted benching, and proper wood-fired or electric heating systems as our permanent installations — all mounted on custom-fabricated, road-legal trailers.

The Kevin Holland build became our flagship portable project for a reason. Kevin trains across multiple facilities and travels constantly for fight camps and UFC events. He needed a sauna that could maintain his heat therapy protocol regardless of location — not a compromise, not a "close enough" solution, but a real sauna that happened to have wheels. We built a 7×12-foot towable unit on a custom dual-axle trailer with a GVWR of 7,000 pounds. The interior is full western red cedar with two-tier benching that seats 4–6 people. The wood-fired stove (Harvia M3) heats the space to 195°F in under 40 minutes. The exterior features charred cedar cladding (shou sugi ban technique) that's both weather-resistant and visually striking.

Engineering a portable sauna is fundamentally different from a permanent build. Every component must handle road vibration, wind loading at highway speeds, and the constant stress of being towed over varying road surfaces. Our trailer frames are custom-fabricated from structural steel with independent torsion axles, electric brakes, and stabilizer jacks at all four corners. The sauna structure is connected to the trailer frame through isolation mounts that dampen road vibration — without these, wood joints would work loose within a few thousand miles of towing.

Weight distribution is critical for safe towing. A portable sauna is essentially a heavy, top-loaded trailer, and improper weight distribution creates dangerous sway at highway speeds. We engineer each build with the wood-fired stove and stone load positioned directly over the axles, and the bench structure distributed evenly fore and aft. Every completed unit is weighed and balanced before delivery, with tongue weight verified at 10–15% of total weight per industry towing standards.

The wood-fired heating system in our portable builds deserves special attention. We use Harvia and IKI wood-fired stoves specifically rated for mobile applications — these stoves feature reinforced fireboxes that handle the additional stress of transport. The chimney system uses a triple-wall insulated pipe with a spark arrestor cap, and the roof penetration is sealed with a high-temperature silicone boot rated to 500°F. Inside, a heat shield system protects the surrounding cedar walls with proper clearances per NFPA standards.

Interior finishing in a portable sauna follows the same standards as our permanent builds. Western red cedar is the default interior wood — its aromatic properties, natural antimicrobial resistance, and thermal comfort make it the clear choice. Benching is multi-level with ergonomic backrests, and all bench connections use through-bolted stainless steel hardware (not screws, which can work loose under road vibration). Lighting is 12V LED powered by the trailer's electrical system, with a warm 2200K color temperature that creates the right atmosphere.

Mobility features set these builds apart from any permanent installation. Leveling jacks at all four corners allow precise leveling on uneven terrain — ranch land, lake house properties, and event venues rarely have perfectly flat surfaces. Tie-down points are welded into the trailer frame for secure transport. The exterior is fully weather-sealed for travel in rain, and all windows use automotive-grade tempered glass with rubber gaskets rated for highway wind loading.

Our portable saunas serve several distinct use cases in the DFW area and beyond. Ranch and lake house owners use them as relocatable wellness amenities — tow it to the ranch for the weekend, bring it back for the week. Event companies rent high-end portable saunas for corporate wellness retreats, music festivals, and private events. Athletes like Kevin Holland use them to maintain training protocols on the road. Real estate developers have commissioned portable saunas as model home amenities that move between properties during sales campaigns.

The portable luxury sauna is also an independent asset in a way that permanent installations aren't. A permanent sauna adds value to your home but can't come with you if you move. A towable unit is yours — sell it, relocate it, or pass it down. Several of our portable builds have been resold at 80–90% of original cost because demand far exceeds the number of builders producing them at this quality level.

When Kevin Holland called, he didn't want a camping sauna. He wanted the same sauna experience he'd get in a $30,000 permanent build, but on wheels. That's exactly what we delivered — and it proved that portable doesn't have to mean compromise. The cedar smells the same, the heat hits the same, the löyly is the same. It just happens to have a hitch on it.

Building a sauna that survives highway speeds and still performs like a fixed installation requires a completely different engineering approach. Every joint, every connection, every component has to handle vibration and wind loading that permanent builds never see. That's why almost nobody does this at a luxury level — it's genuinely hard to do right.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Portable luxury saunas from DFW Custom Sauna typically range from $18,000 to $55,000. The price reflects not just the sauna construction but the custom trailer fabrication, vibration isolation engineering, road-rated components, and DOT compliance that make it safely towable. A compact 6×8-foot unit with a wood-fired stove starts around $18,000, while a full-size 7×12-foot build with premium finishing, shou sugi ban exterior, and electric brake system reaches $45,000–$55,000. Every build includes leveling jacks, weather sealing, and road testing before delivery.

Most half-ton trucks (Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, RAM 1500, Toyota Tundra) can safely tow our portable saunas. Our compact builds weigh 3,500–5,000 pounds fully loaded, and larger units reach 5,000–7,000 pounds. Your truck needs a Class III or IV hitch receiver, a brake controller for the trailer's electric brakes, and a towing capacity that exceeds the unit's GVWR by at least 20%. Abbas provides exact weight specifications during the design phase so you can verify compatibility with your specific vehicle.

A wood-fired sauna uses a steel firebox stove loaded with seasoned hardwood (oak, hickory, or birch work best) that heats a load of sauna stones stacked on top of and around the firebox. As the stones reach 300–500°F, they radiate heat into the sauna space, bringing ambient air temperature to 150–195°F. Pouring water over the hot stones creates löyly — bursts of steam that dramatically increase the perceived heat intensity. A properly sized wood-fired stove (like the Harvia M3) heats a portable sauna to full temperature in 30–40 minutes. The fire-tending ritual is part of the experience — it connects you to the centuries-old Finnish sauna tradition.

When built to our standards, yes. The interior experience is identical — same western red cedar, same bench design, same heating performance, same löyly. The difference is in the engineering underneath: a portable sauna requires vibration isolation, road-rated connections, weight distribution management, and weather sealing that permanent builds don't need. These additions actually make the structure more robust in some ways — our portable builds use through-bolted stainless steel connections throughout, while permanent builds typically use screws and adhesives. The Kevin Holland build has been towed thousands of miles and still performs like it did on day one.

Absolutely — portable sauna rental and event services are a growing market in DFW and nationwide. Several of our portable builds are used for corporate wellness events, music festivals, private parties, and pop-up wellness experiences. The unit arrives on its trailer, levels in 15–20 minutes with the built-in jacks, and is ready for sessions within 40 minutes of lighting the fire. Some clients have built businesses around renting their portable saunas for $500–$1,500 per event. If you're considering a portable build as a business investment, Abbas can discuss configurations optimized for commercial use.
